Using Authentic Video in Your Language Class

With satellite TV and the internet, resources for authentic video abound!  The question is, how can you effectively use video clips in your (beginning, intermediate, advanced) language classes?  In this session, we will

·     focus on creating level-appropriate tasks

·     learn techniques for practicing both receptive and productive skills

·     suggest various pre-viewing, viewing and post-viewing activities

·     explore methods for unpacking the cultural richness of the visual and audio content

Digital-storytelling

Co-sponsored by CARLA and the Department of Learning Technologies, Curriculum and Instruction

Give your students a great reason to use the target language -  telling stories!  Whether sharing narratives about themselves, reporting on activities, creating fantasy stories, or finishing a fairy tale in a new way, students will love to express themselves in creative ways with digital storytelling tools.  This workshop will introduce you to digital storytelling and the role it can play in enhancing second language teaching and learning.

iTunes U for Language Instruction

iTunes U is a system that uses iTunes technology to manage, distribute and control access to educational audio and video content for students within the University as well as the broader community. We will show you how to request an account, how to upload files to it, and how to get your students to use it.  We will also lead a discussion on the possible applications of iTunes U for language instruction.

Moodle: Ideas for your Second Language Class

More and more instructors are switching from WebVista to Moodle. Former IT Fellow Kate Clements will share ideas and tips for using Moodle's features (including Wimba) in second-language instruction.  Come be inspired by viewing a variety of actual lesson examples from current and recent course offerings.

Hands on Training

Introduction to the Mac Labs

Mac computers are now installed in 3 of our 4 classrooms.  If you need a refresher on how to use the Mac DiLL for pairing or recording activities, want to know how to spy on your students or lock their screens using Apple Remote Desktop, or just want to know how to avoid using the Macs altogether by making them run as Windows machines, then this is the session for you.

Using Voicethread

VoiceThread is a free, east-to-use online tool where students can comment on images, documents, and even videos.  Comments can be made by voice, text, or doodles! Use VoiceThread for storytelling, oral reports, expressing opinions, or describing pictures.  See www.voicethread.com for examples.

Wimba VoiceTools on Moodle

Four of the Wimba Voice Tools are now available on the University Moodle course management system.  They are Voice Board, Voice Presentation, Podcaster and Voice Recorder.  Come to this session to learn how to set these tools up on your Moodle course website.

Wimba VoiceTools on WebVista

Wimba VoiceTools are available through your WebVista course site – no additional software is needed! Learn how you and your students can use a VoiceBoard as a class communication tool, how your students can comment on web material with VoicePresentation, or how you can create a Podcast with content created specifically for your class or by your students! Other tools include VoiceRecorder and VoiceEmail.

Part 2: Learn how to download a video from the Internet (e.g. YouTube), edit it with a free online video-editing program, and re-publish it online for your language classes.
